3TB Cloudbox - does not appear on network

PS if you now switch of the nas and load the standalone kernel, and mount /dev/sda7 as explained earlier on /sda7 you should find the file boot.log in /sda7
The content of that could also be helpful

Cleanly shutdown NAS using web interface. Restarted loading the stand alone kernel...

Code: Select all
fvdw-sta-kirkwood login: root
Password:
root@fvdw-sta-kirkwood:/ # gdisk -l /dev/sda
GPT fdisk (gdisk) version 0.8.5

Problem opening /dev/sda for reading! Error is 6.

Before the NAS was shutdown, I noticed some error messages in the console window but, foolishly didn't record the details. Something about CHS errors on the disk.

Hi ryandkg

Do you sure you have a clean disk
Background: 3tb white cloudbox with original, most current, firmware. The NAS console was still reachable but files were no longer readable in Lacie browser even though firmware was reporting disk usage at approx 1.4 TB.
and these CHS errors message should mean the disk has bad blocks.

I think my disk is toast. I was trying to repeat the booting procedure today and when I attempted to repeat the steps outlined in http://plugout.net/viewtopic.php?f=28&t=2445#p22006, I get

Code: Select all
root@fvdw-sta-kirkwood:/ # gdisk -l /dev/sda
GPT fdisk (gdisk) version 0.8.5

Problem opening /dev/sda for reading! Error is 6.

So unless I have missed something, I think the drive died overnight after a long illness. RIP.

Just in case, I went through the fvdw-sl install firmware again. It seems to run fine but after restarting in standalone, Error is still 6!

I am sorry but it seems that your disk is dead.

You can try to get out the disk and plug it in a laptop for doing some checks (You can use programs of the manufactor)

I will do that.

If it is indeed dead, from what I have seen on other threads I should just be able to put a new drive in the Lacie case and load the correct image using fvdw-sl. Do you know if anyone has used a 4TB or 6TB drive in the whitebox?

No I do not note if a member tried to use such big disks.

But with the gpt support you should be able to use them and also an ext3 fs supports partitions upto 20TB.

But I don't know if the Cloudbox power supply may be used with these disks.

I am happy to report that I have installed a new Seagate ST4000VN000 4TB drive and it seems to be working fine. The installation of the firmware went smoothly and the drive appeared on the network shortly after rebooting. I am now in the process of configuring the settings.

Many thanks for your assistance over the last couple of days. :rock
