Trouble with nfs

Trouble with nfs

Postby hfro » Sun Nov 06, 2011 8:35 pm

Hi,
I have a networkspace vs1 ans I backup my computer files using rdiff-backup over a nfs mounted share.
It worked very well with firmware 8 and 9. Yesterday I've upgraded my NAS to v10, and after several minutes, my backup hangs-up.
If I restart the NFS server using the web nterface the backup goes on.
Does anyone have this kind of trouble ?

Thank you.

Hi Hfro

sorry to hear this. In 10-0 the NFS server was upgraded to a newer version to as problems were reported with he old one.
In 10-1 no changes were made on the nfs server compared with 10-0 so it is logical that the problem is not gone.
Seems the new version also has issues. There is not much I can do about it as it is third party code.
I will put it on the to do list to investigate
For the moment you might consider to use ftp or samba instead for back up.

Thank you for your answer.
As I use rdiff-bachup, it doesn't work over SMBFS or CIFS. I will try with ftp.

just for reference I just did a backup between my two nwsp vs2 via NFS it complete in 30 minutes 10 GB and the nfs servers on both are still running.
if this a specific nwsp1 problem then it will become difficult for me to try to solve it as I don't have a nwsp1, but Jocko has , maybe he can test it as well on his nwsp1

I'm not home this weekend. Tomorrow, I'll do a backup to my nwsp1 using a remote NFS share ;)

Hi hfro & fvdw

There is indeed a problem with the NFS server. :?

Three tests have produced the same results. T tried to make a backup of a shared of my NWSP2 to a NWSP1. This share was accessible from the NFS server of the NWSP2.

Mount the share on the NWSP1 works well and the backup starts without problem but after 15-20 minutes, the backup has no more in progress.

The stopping the backup is caused because the remote share not responding ... (while all the NFS services always seem to work!).

Then, you can't unmount the share and It is needed to stop the NFS server on NWSP2 and reboot again, for umounting the remote share

In short, a bug to deepen :?: :?: :?:

mmm...as it happens after 15 or 30 mintes it could be related to daemon used the spin down the disk, for whatever reason the communication stops, seem remote server is not responding.

@ jocko can you run it again with killing noflushd first on the nas that delivers the file (in your case the nwsp2)
