Transfer rates read/write

Do the home made firmwares also speedup data transfer rates ? or does it add functionality only ?

I don't know what the original speed of a nwsp1 was. But I reach on samba server or FTP about 7-8 and sometimes 10 MB/s using a gibit LAN connection. This is for bigger files. Small files will slow down transfer considerably because of disk activity needed to write them into the file system.
