Network Space vs1 with 750gb disk

Postby pauleline » Wed Oct 09, 2013 2:08 pm

Hi all,

I have been reading this forum with great interest and am thinking of converting my LaCIe Network Space vs1 to this fine FW. The NAS has now been retired since it was replaced by a Synology NAS (that has all the missing functionality over the orginal LaCie FW).

My question is the following (and Yes I did do a search first... ;) ): I have a 750gb model of the Network Space. I only read instructions for 1TB of 500gb hard disk in the documentation for first time installation. But with the 750gb disk size I assume various numbers of sectors / cylinders etc. have to be adjusted.

Am I correct? Can anyone provide the correct settings / instructions for first time installation (with fvdw-sl 10-1) and then upgrade to version 15-0 for this disk size?

Thanks and regards,
pauleline

Hi pauleline,

First, you must check if you have an AF disk or not.

The partition table for a 750GB is :
I assume that the number of cylinders is 91201. You can control this number with fdisk in its output head

So for a not AF disk
Code: Select all
Device Boot      Start         End      Blocks  Id System
/dev/sda1               1          64      514048+ 83 Linux
/dev/sda2              65         128      514080  83 Linux
/dev/sda3             129         192      514080  82 Linux swap
/dev/sda4             193       91201  xxxxxxxxxxx  5 Extended
/dev/sda5             193         292      803218+ 83 Linux
/dev/sda6             293         293        8001  83 Linux
/dev/sda7             294         357      514048+ 83 Linux
/dev/sda8             358       91201  xxxxxxxxxxx 83 Linux

and for an AF disk
Code: Select all
Device Boot      Start         End      Blocks  Id System
/dev/sda1               9          72      514048+ 83 Linux
/dev/sda2              73         136      514080  83 Linux
/dev/sda3             137         200      514080  82 Linux swap
/dev/sda4             201       91200  xxxxxxxxxxx  5 Extended (note 91200 instead of 91201)
/dev/sda5             209         312      803218+ 83 Linux
/dev/sda6             321         328        8001  83 Linux
/dev/sda7             337         400      514048+ 83 Linux
/dev/sda8             409       91200  xxxxxxxxxxx 83 Linux(note 91200 instead of 91201)

Note : If you try to use the partition table set for not AF disk whereas it is, you should get a warning about a wrong alignment of sectors. Then stop to use it and try with the AF partition table.

Hi Jocko,

thanks for your help.

In order to do what you suggest I will have to take the drive out of the LaCie enclosure and hook ik up to a Linux computer. Right?
I cannot do this at the moment since I'm not at home with the actual device. Also I will have to make a Debian Live CD and prepare a computer.

So I will need some time to get back to you on this. Be patient please...

For now thanks again and I will post the results when available.

Regards.

Yes, you must do this. Of course only for installing version 10.1
Note : the fvdw-sl console can not work with nwsp1 (not enough RAM :dry )
