When you have booted your windows PC with a live knoppix cd then sda will probably be the hard disk of your windows computer.

I assume you have attached the harddsik to your windows PC using a sate->usb interface.
Typically then the harddisk will be sdb (unles you have more then 1 disk in your windows PC)

What out put do you get when you use
Code: Select all
fdisk -l

(the option -l is the letter l not the number 1)

fdisk does not see the drive
root@PartedMagic:~# fdisk -l

Disk /dev/sdd: 1977 MB, 1977614336 bytes
62 heads, 61 sectors/track, 1021 cylinders, total 3862528 sectors
Units = sectors of 1 * 512 = 512 bytes
Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
I/O size (minimum/optimal): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
Disk identifier: 0x00000000

Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/sdd1 8199 3862527 1927164+ 6 FAT16
root@PartedMagic:~#
the only prog that sees the drive is gsmartcontrol
that program can run a test says
Complete error log:

SMART Error Log Version: 1
No Errors Logged

the original disk is has bad sectors,I'm trying to copy as much as i can to another disk.

WD has some hard disk software to check and low level format the drive.
maybe that brings it back to life

that is because you are working with sectors instead of cylinders
give the command "u" (without the quotes) in fdisk to switch between sectors and cylinders

Code: Select all
Command (m for help): u
Changing display/entry units to cylinders
