My Current Firmware Version is good old 1.2.9.47

Postby mvlanen » Wed Jul 31, 2013 7:57 pm

Hi,
I am bit new to this forum.
I am having an SPD8020 but never updated the firmware.
Looking at these posts i am realy ancious to upgrade it to use the new functionality.
What are the correct steps for doing so?
Can I straightforward upgrade to latest version 14.0?
What are the risks? do's and dont's.

Thanks in advance.

Hi

sorry for late response I missed this post yesterday
It has been a long time since Philips version 1.2.9.47
In principle you should be able to install fvdw-sl-14-0 right away using the firmware menu of the Philips 1.2.9.47 web interface.
However I never tested it myself.
Also we found that there are spd8020 out there with a deviating partition size of 100 MB instead of 256 MB
if you are the owner of such an exceptional case then you can upgrade to 14-0 as it won't firt on the partition. In that case you will need to remove the disk and repartition it (see guide for installing a new harddisk)
But if it has normal size partitions it should go via the webinterface.
To find out what you have you can do two things
(1) just try to upgrade , if it fails then it will just boot again the old Philips firmware
(2) check with ssh client (Putty) what kind of partition table is on the disk and if it is ok do the upgrade via de web interface
To log in with putty (ssh) use username: root and password: giveit2me
Then at the linux command prompt do
Code: Select all
fdisk -l /dev/sda

and post the output here to check the partition table

It might be a good idea before doing it to make a back up of important data you may have stored on the spd8020
There is in principle no risk of losing it but if the upgrade fails and the nas refuses to boot after the upgrade then you will need to remove the disk from the casing to correct the error or retrieve the data by connecting it to a pc running Linux. For a non linux user this can be a difficult process

Dear fvdw,

here you are:

# fdisk -l /dev/sda

Disk /dev/sda: 500.1 GB, 500107862016 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 60801 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes

Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/sda1 1 32 257008+ 83 Linux
/dev/sda2 * 33 64 257040 83 Linux
/dev/sda3 65 96 257040 82 Linux swap
/dev/sda4 97 60801 487612912+ 5 Extended
/dev/sda5 97 144 385528+ 83 Linux

yes this seems to be a spd8020 with normal size of partitions, you can try to upgrade to fvdw-sl-14-0

But as said make a backup of important data if you feel uncomfortable to take out the disk and connect to to a pc running Linux in case problems arise.

success

oh how to upgrade download the 14-0 firmware upgrade for spd8020 form the download section and load the file in the firmware upgrade window from the the Philips web interface from this 1.2.9.47 firmware.
It might take some time to upload, write it and verify it

Hi, just performed the upgrade and looks ok so far.
I can see that in the webrealm it is now showing in the browser.
It sais: "The server nlns001ovloc at fvdw-sl NAS Management requires a password".

However I have always some issue with the correct password for the 'admin' user in the browser.
It's not always accepted, can't explain why, eventhough I know the password for 100% sure.
I also had to use it for performing the upgrade just now.

Well, we will see. I will check again later and post the results.

Who is by the way that admin user in the browser?
You don't see it in cat /etc/passwd.

Marcel.

PS: I also had some issues with files which could not be removed from the share using Windows PC's. Access denied.
As being a Linux root user it's rather easy to 'fix' this.
:P

You don't see it in cat /etc/passwd.

Please note mvlanen that the account 'admin' is not a user linux account but only an account used by the apache server to allow the administrator feature.

Currently, there is only one valid linux user (having a valid shell): root (and its default passwd : giveit2me)

Hello, I 've got yesterday an spd8020-drive and would like to use it with new firmware. Now is installed 1.2.9.fw fvdw 3.0. If I understand right, I should install first old firmware, like 14-0 and then the newest like 15.01, but I can nowhere find a link to download earlier firmware then 15.01. Could you help me, pls, too.

(sorry for my english ^^)

in principle it should be possible to upgrade directly to 15-1

However I took some files form the archive if you don't trust that
here you can find version 10-1

viewtopic.php?f=7&t=234#p1481

ps Upgrade will fail if you have an spd8020 with small system partitions, but then it will keep functioning as usual with running the old firmware
There some spd8020's around that have only 100MB system partitions. Ton install fvdw-sl on those you need to use the install new hdd procedure
