How to access the NAS through the internet

How to access the NAS through the internet

Postby angelp25 » Tue Mar 31, 2020 8:06 pm

Good evening,

This time I write because I am quite lost in general with many NAS configurations, I have to read the guides little by little but in general well, I learn.

Now the problem I have is that due to the virus I have changed my house and I am not at the same address as the NAS, that is why I want to access my files online through Internet.

I have a created new user and I have activated FTP, I have a ddns configured and I am able to access the fvdw console through the ddns (NO-IP) address. xxxxx.ddns.net

But I am not able to mount the unit while away from home to access my files.

In my case I have a MACBOOK, but I could try it in windows, my idea is to be able to mount the disk as a network drive, I do not care if it is in the windows explorer or in some external app.

Could you help me configure FTP? What exactly am I doing wrong?

Thank you.

Hi

I do not think use ftp is the best way and I think apple on its latest OS desactivates it.

In your case, the best way is to use the webdav access. So see https://help.dreamhost.com/hc/en-us/articles/216473527-Accessing-WebDAV-with-Mac-OS-X-and-Linux

Then you have to enable webdav access on your nas and select what share will be enabled via webdav. The url must be http(s)://yourDDNS/sharename.

the login are the same as the ones set for each share

Okay, thats amazing, it is really easy.

Even i want to know if you now a ddns service for totally free, because no-ip i have to renew constantly, is not really for ever.

In addition, i have installed resilio sync, which is even really nice, can i convert one folder from my nas in a "Google Drive" folder, i mean, a folder where i can store and share links to give access to others? To share files.

I have also tried to connect remotely to the ftp server but the connection is denied. I am using an iPhone application called FileBrowser and the error message on the app is "Connected, but failed to receive greeting from FTP server." The FTP log just states connection denied - is there something I am doing wrong?

I also tried webdav but it did not work either

Hi,

As there is an information in the FTP log then you have already open the ftp port command on your router.

The denied message should mean you use as Ip filter option :, the mode "allow only" so the ip used by your smartphone must be blocked in this case.

About webdav, after enabling the feature and selecting what shares is available via webdav, you need to open the apache port : 80 if you do not yet set https protocol and 443 with https protocol.

When you open the ports 80 or 443 you have to change at least the default password for the firmware web-interface!
