yes try if it is possible to compress sda4 in this way and store in ram and then upload to your windows pc via tftp
if it is bigger then 256 MB then the standalone kernel might stop reponding as the ram is full. Then yoiu simple load it again and we need to find another way.

if you are happy with the backups, you can proceed with using the fvdw-sl installer script and choose the option not to make backups of the original firmware (you already did)

Yes, I did, but it failed because it tried to delete the partition structure that was actually not the one in the disk.
Don't I have to manually delete the partition strcture?

well...
The backup of sda4 was successful and it was reduced to 150 MB, But the backup of sda5 seems to be too big. I tried twice (second one adding the option -9 to he gzip to get a higher compression rate) and both times the memory got ful.

The installer script should be able to do it, but you can also do it manually

then the option yopu have here is deleted partition 8, define it again but with identifier linux file system and format it in ext3.
ps yopu could consider, to gain time, to use only lets say 5 GB because we only want to store sda5 temporarily.
To format it use this command
Code: Select all
mke2fs-64 -j -m 1 /dev/sda8

Mount it
Code: Select all
mkdir /sda8
mount /dev/sda8 /sda8

Now send the out put of gzpip to /sda8
After that you can upload it from /sda8 using tftp to your windows pc

Good strategy :) I'll try that.
Just one question out of curiosity, cannot the linux kernel mount the partition as it is now? FD00 is a Linux raid partition type... I don't know a lot but it sounds like something that linux should be able to handle...

yes but it then needs a kernel with raid support and special programs to assembly the raid array.
You can try what happens if you try to mount it, the standalone kernel supports raid but probably you will need mdadm to assemble the array instead of the mount command. If you want to try that i can sent you a static compiled version of that program which you could upload and try out. But in principle it is waste of time for this excersize
