AFP - TIME MACHINE - CATALINA

i've updated to Big Sur....now i've another problem.

after the first backup i can't reach the disk anymore.
i have an error " check server name or ip address and retry".
If i disable Time machine share from my nas i can reach the disk and i can add to desktop.

i really don't know where is the problem.

which data do you need from my mac to understand where is the problem?

UPDATE= reading on internet seems that TM need fruit:metadata = stream on smb.conf.
i've tried to mod the conf but it seems not save the mod.

Indeed at each time you edit a share or an user account, this file is overwritten.

Note: maybe it was not a good idea to upgrade to bigsur because on this OS version there are big changes on TM service

Where did you find this information about metadata option because currently smb.conf uses the options as described in the related samba page: https://www.samba.org/samba/docs/current/man-html/vfs_fruit.8.html

So that you may check what fruit options should be used on your mac OS, I created a small ini file in the share fvdw : smbTM.ini. (of course you need to keep its syntax).
On each option, you have a comment line which lists the authorized values. I also added a new option: veto_appledouble because if you do not use the default value with the option resource you have to disable veto_appledouble.

So edit the values in smbTM.ini and samba server will use them as soon as you edit a share (open any share and do a submit)
Note: if you use bad settings, you may also need to abort the samba process after editing a share:
Code: Select all
killall smbd
/usr/sbin/smbd -D -l /var/log/samba

To install the test patch, do
Code: Select all
plugout download 6608
tar -xf /tmp/fvdw-sl-18-2-tm-test.gz -C /

Note: this patch includes also the fix for TM size bug

Please to post also when you set a tm share
Code: Select all
cat /etc/avahi/services/tm-samba.service
I assume you have enabled zeroconf (avahi)

Hello,
Time Machine was running fine up until a few days.

I tried various thing to fix it :

-Reinstall TM Patch
-Delete FileShare that contains Backup and re-create it

I'm having the following error on my mac :

The selected network disk doesn't support the required capabilities.

Any idea ?

Thanks !

Ok

I am building a virtual host with a version 10.15.5 (not found an iso file with version 15.15.7). Then I will check if I have the same behaviour

Hello !
Thanks for the follow up.

For your information, I think I tried to run these commands before that TM stopped working. Could it be related ?

killall smbd
/usr/sbin/smbd -D -l /var/log/samba -d 1

Thanks

Hi

Maybe because samba daemon is very verbose even if the debug level is equal than 1. This should be used only for a test. You can check this with the command
Code: Select all
df -h /dev/sda5

Reboot the nas in this case but otherwise the debug level can not be the cause of your issues

Hi

Currently I get a kernel panic after 15-20 min with my VM catalina 10.15.7 on my microsoft laptop. So I think it will be enough to check the TM issue with our firmware.
More information within 1-2 days
