2big NAS not booting with fvdw-sl 18-1

Postby JamesBond » Fri Nov 15, 2019 9:32 pm

Hi I have one of this Lacie 2big NAS that came to my hands without HD's.
So I followed all guides here and even clunc was not working, he didn't detect the Uboot loading, I had to use a serial USB-TTL device connected to the board and when Uboot started issue various CTRL-C with the keyboard so I can stay on "Marvell>>" prompt and them manually put the tftp commands and so on...
to install the firmware, but that went ok until the end.

Now the problem is the disk has everything ok installed but Uboot loads and goes always to his internal rescue mode and I can't manage to make it boot the firmware on /dev/sda7 as suppose to be.

This is what I got on starting the NAS trough the serial console using PuTTY on the connected COM port:

Re: 2big NAS not booting with fvdw-sl 18-1

Postby fvdw » Fri Nov 15, 2019 11:19 pm

Hi

You can not install our firmware from uboot. You need the standalone kernel.
It seems your 2big2 installed the lacie firmware from nand, this because it fails the find a kernel and root file system on disk

Booting Nexus layout from disk 0...
Failed to mount ext2 filesystem...
** Bad ext2 partition or disk - ide 0:3 **
Booting Nexus layout from disk 1...

Booting Nexus rescue from NAND...

For installing fvdw-sl firmware using fvdw-sl console and standalone kernel you should put only one disk in the nas (most righthand side seen from the back) when using fvdw-sl console, also read this post in case clunc is not detecting your nas https://plugout.net/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=2645.

PS How did you prepare fvdw-sl system disk ?

Re: 2big NAS not booting with fvdw-sl 18-1

Postby JamesBond » Fri Nov 15, 2019 11:52 pm

All installed ok.

This is what I did:

1- On my serial console after Uboot start I hit CTRL-C until get the "Marvell>>" prompt.

2- Them I put the following commands:
Code: Select all
setenv ipaddr <my IP>
setenv serverip <IP where TFTP is running>
setenv bootargs console=ttyS0,115200 netconsole=6666@${ipaddr}/,6666@${serverip}/ root=/dev/sda7
tftpboot 0x800000 UIMAGE-3142-KIRKWOOD-171-standalone
bootm

Uboot starts loading...

3- After finishing loading telnet terminal manages to get in using the root user and default password.

4- On telnet terminal I did the fvdw-sl-programs command and folow the screen questions and etc. until finishes ok asking to do a reboot -f

That's it, after reboot goes to NAND rescue as I said, but I'm almost there... I think I need to change this other env variable so he can boot from the right place like this:
Code: Select all
setenv bootcmd "disk 0x800000 0:6 ; setenv bootargs console=ttyS0,115200 root=/dev/sda7 rw; bootm;"

Hurraaaaiiii, success after that last setenv, now boots and I have web interface and all the rest.
thanks for this fantastic firmware that allow me to reuse the 2big NAS !!! :punk

Just one question since I have the fvdw-sl firmware version 18-1, should I update to the last version?

Also I can now add the second HDD and start the RAID, correct?

Thanks again. :thumbup

Hi JamesBond,

:applause
Good job :thumbup and almost without helping
Now I do not understand why fvdw-sl console did not work. Maybe because the uboot already used the rescue mode on your first attempts :scratch

About your last issues.
Yes you should upgrade your version 18-1 to 18-2 and you may initialize your 2d disk and create the raid via the web-interface (disks setup menu)

I found out why fvdw-sl console could not work doing the ctrl-c, my env stein and stdout have network value and not nc.

"nc" sends the text trought network command instead the serial port as now. But I can't change it properly, since when I type setenv stein nc, I lost access right away from serial console and couldn't type the other commands and saveenv in the end.

Do you know if accepts multiple value, like sending for serial and netconsole at the same time?

I think for future will be easier I can access remote than have to open the NAS and connect cables for doing the serial terminal.

Thanks.

Hi, I can't use the samba version (4.9.4) as my windows 10 can't see the shares as he stopped supporting SMB v1.
When I tried to select that samba version and save he goes back to the normal one, any problems here or do I need to do some other thing?

Also I just made a donation to support you and this amazing beautiful firmware that revive my old NAS, thanks !!! :applause

Thank you for your donation much appreciated, we added you to the donators group and granted access to addons, so you should be able to install samba 4.

Ps to be able to download addons enter your plugout ysername and password in the webinterface (system management)

Ahh ok, that's why the samba 4 was not working, didn't that is considered an addon.

Ok perfect, I'll try it now and let you know later.
