Upgrade on 2x 4TB HDDs

A brief review so far:

FW 15.1 (for 2big2) could be installed via the fvdw-sl-console.

Direct update to 16-0 failed with error message

Firmware upgrade failed, upgrade process aborted, reason:
fw upgrade found platform file firmware package differs from that on running system

I'm looking now for the 15.3 and will report afterwards.

Since version 16.0, the package is common for 5big2 and 2big2. To use it you must install first version 15.3

Update from 15.1 to 15.3 failed.

Update from 15.1 to 15.2 worked.
Update from 15.2 to 15.3 worked.
Update from 15.3 to 16.0 worked.

So my test with a single 750GB came out pretty fine. The interface ist fast, the transfer rate, too. Even the cooler is quiter than in Lacie original FW.

I'm now going to upgrade the capacity from 2x 1,5 TB to 2x 3 or 4TB in the next weeks.
The console is a great great tool doing al the partinioning stuff and establishing an excellent base for the future.
(it also worked in a Fritzbox environment with IP range 192.168.178.xx)

Big thanks to this well done job you did !!

System Name LACIE-2big2

thanks for sharing the experience :thumbup

we made indeed some changes in upgrading functions, seem we lost a little track of that.
I would have expected that installation of 15-3 from 15-1 would have worked.

I think I will upgrade the console package that it contains 16-0. First wait and see if we have some bugs in there
16-0 was a complex upgrade to make raid support possible. Many files have bee changed..

You are right fvdw. I checked the upgrade script for lacie NAS: all versions 15.0 upto 15.3 use the same script !

Hi WD9895

a question, helping another member with his 2big2 it seems there is confusion on which disk is in lefthand hand slot and which one in the righthand slot.
As you are running a 2big2 with original u-boot you might be able to find it out for us
It is important to know because the firmware kernel uses a diskmap assigning sda always to bus number 0:0:0 and loads the rest of the firmware from this disk.

I want to get confirmation on which disk slot seen from the back side of the 2big2 is the disk with device number 0:0:0 and which one the disk with bus number 1:0:0

From the experiments posted in this thread for 2big2 I get more and more the impression that bus 0:0:0 is the righthand slot.
If this is correct then our first time install instruction is wrong as there it is mentioned that it is the lefthand slot.

This could explain why you had these issues with upgrading.

If you don't have raid setup it is easy to test.

Switch it off take out the disk in the lefthand slot and boot the 2big2 if the firmware comes up normal, please post the output of dmesg command. It should now list only list one disk and from the output we can see if it got assignment sda and to which bus number is connected so we know which slot has this device number

Repeat the test with taking out the disk in the righthand slot and restoring the disk in the lefthand slot,
If boots and firmware comes up post the output of dmesg.
If it doesn't boot and firmare doesn't load then put in again the disk in righthand slot and the firmware should come up, now post the output of dmesg

thx for your help in figuring out this problem

Hi fvdw,

unfortunately I didn't upgraded the 2big2 with the 4TB HDDs yet. Actually no time for that.
Does it help you if I quickly plug in the single drive I have ?

yes you can do the with one single drive by putting in in (lefthand) LH slot and RH slot

From a test of a user posted on nas-central it seems that bus nr 0 that we use to identify is the RH slot and not the LH slot as we thought until today
