All sorted using Wireshark. Both NAS are up and running RAID5 without the loss of any data.
As I remeber it several months ago while I was doing a major system upgrade and both NAS were out of the loop we had a couple of blackouts while I was away. The UPS eventually ran out of power resulting in an ungraceful shutdown of the system. I believe this is what caused the corruption of the firmware.
