It depends on file size, smb protocol and if other activities are running on the device such as media servers building a database. Copy many small files will be slower as well because of file headers to be written
We recently added samba 4.9.4 that supports smb2 and 3 proticol. This improves speed as well.
On my 5big5 I reach for big files (> 100MB) and samba 4.9.4 writing speed of 30 MB/s and read 45 MB/s. On samba 3.0.37 this drops to 20 and 30 MB/s.
