[SOLVED] Firmware not installed on NAS

[SOLVED] Firmware not installed on NAS

Postby shiby » Mon Oct 21, 2019 5:12 pm

Hello all,

I had the chance to get an old Lacie 5big Network v2 - latest firmware 2.2.12.2
I obviously tried to use it and quickly faced a problem with SMB v1.

After searching on google, I've discovered this forum and the fvdw-sl alternative firmware.
I was super happyt to discover that with a little donation I would be able to run SMBv2 on this old boy!

Nevertheless I tried to install the firmware and everything works like a charm excepted than after the last reboot comand, it's still Lacie OS that boot...

I've downloaded the latest firmware 18.1 and used the kirkwood UIMAGE.
I think, I went thourgh the whole process without any issue:
* Console was ok
* Uboot script has been triggered when the NAS start up
* telnet and authentication with root went ok
* fvdw-sl-programs command was working fine
* all questions were asked and I answered "Yes"

then I type reboot -f at then end...and land on Lacie page :'(

any idea of what I missed?

thanks for your answer.

Probably you used the old disks of lacie as they were and performed the install with all disk installed
Lacie has the habbit to store its firmware and kernel on all five disk, when the nas boots the bootloader will search all disk starting from most righthand side (seen from back side) and move to next if it cannot find a kernel on it. The fvdw-sl firmware is stored on most lefthand side disk.

To make installation work you should remove all disk from the 5big2 and put in only 1 disk in most lefthand slot
Then run the console and fvdw-sl installer.
Note that this procedure will delete all partitions on the disk.
at the give command reboot -f
and fvdw-sl firmware should come up.

Put the other disks but delete all partitions first using a usb-sata connector
