smb version

With a new firmware of my Fritzbox 7490 I ended up the use of SMB1, also to Fritz-Nas on USB port. The new Fritz FW does not support smb1 any longer.

So I also changed protocol of my Lacie w. fvdw firmware:
- I unchecked the SMB1 support in "Features" of Win10 (1909)
- I changed to samba version (4.9.4) in the setup menu "AFP/Samba server". All other options here remain unchecked.

and started my daily robocopy batch to mirror my data harddisk on the Lacie NAS.
The performance is a nightmare. At least 10x slower than samba version (3.0.37).

What is wrong ?

At first glance, nothing. Did you reboot the nas ?

what do you mean with "robocopy" ?

We will need some more info to be able to see if we can create the same issue on or nas to be able to investigate

Robocopy is a MS tool to copy and mirror file and folders in a very efficent way. Much better than copy or xcopy on Windows systems.

So .... some first findings and measurements.

Rebooted NAS and Win10 PC.

SMB speed
Read 67Mb/s, Write 20 Mb/s

FTP speed
Read 74Mb/s, Write 22 Mb/s

Tested with a 2,5GB file. So the speed seems pretty ok.

I'll check my file copy batch (robocopy) to see if there's a bad parameter. The mirroring of my data SSD on NAS means a lot of file copying, also a lot of small files but it was definitively a lot faster using smb1 and samba 3. This is strange and not logical to me.

On tomorrow or Sunday I'm going to test more.

these speeds are oke, so the issue must be with your "robocopy",
again what is this for a kind of program or is it a shell script ?

Robocopy is part of the Windows system and runs in a shell (CMD).

The speed of your 5big2 is better as I'm taking about my little grandma Lacie network space classic.

Robocopy is not the problem, the slow performance is on the windows explorer, too.

It must something in your windows setup. All my test are made with windows 10 and using file explorer of windows. I only see performance improvement.

Are there any message in samba log file ?(/var/log/samba/smbd.log ?

I found this link https://www.tenforums.com/network-sharing/2806-slow-network-throughput-windows-10-a.html

They suggested this solution (on my pc I don't have LSO in my adapter properties, but maybe you have)
This seemed to work for me:

Disabling “Large Send Offload (LSO)”

Large Send Offload is a technique of improving network performance while at the same time reducing CPU overhead. Apparently it does not work very well, so it was suggested to disable it. If you would like to know about LSO, check this MSDN article from 2001 (Task Offload (NDIS 5.1) (Windows Drivers)).

LSO is an option located in a Device Manager under your network adapter, so this solution requires Administrator Privileges.

Follow these steps:
1.Open Start Menu, right-click on Computer and select Properties
2.Under Control Panel Home located on the left side of the window click on Device Manager
3.You will get a list of all devices on your machine. Expand Network Adapters.
4.Find your Network Card and double-click on it.
5.Select Advanced tab. You will get a list filled with different options.
6.Select Large Send Offload V2 (IPv4) and set the value to Disabled
7.Do the same for Large Send Offload V2 (IPv6) if it is available
8.Click OK

After clicking OK, tried to send a file over the LAN network. Transfer speed started very slow, but it was gradually picking up speed. Decided to restart the computer and try to send that file again and this time it worked like a charm.

Now that sending of files worked as it should, also checked speed for receiving files. It turned out that it was still slow but all that was needed to fix was to disable Large Send Offload V2 on the other computer. Once done, problem was solved for receiving files as well.

Hope this works for you guys / girls
