/dev/sda disappears during install

/dev/sda disappears during install

Postby norax » Fri Jun 22, 2018 11:12 am

I'm trying to install fvdw-sl on my 5big network 2. I downloaded the fvdw-sl console program and got the device to point where I'm telneted in and running the install program.

Before I run the fvdw-sl-programs script I can see that the disk is here...

Code: Select all
root@fvdw-sta-kirkwood:/ # gdisk -l /dev/sda
GPT fdisk (gdisk) version 0.8.5

Partition table scan:
  MBR: not present
  BSD: not present
  APM: not present
  GPT: not present

Creating new GPT entries.
Disk /dev/sda: 19532873728 sectors, 9.1 TiB
Logical sector size: 512 bytes
Disk identifier (GUID): 00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000
Partition table holds up to 128 entries
First usable sector is 34, last usable sector is 19532873694
Partitions will be aligned on 2048-sector boundaries
Total free space is 19532873661 sectors (9.1 TiB)

Number  Start (sector)    End (sector)  Size       Code  Name
root@fvdw-sta-kirkwood:/ #

The install script errors out with this message...

Code: Select all
There was an error formatting /dev/sda5.
Installer will exit.
Installation incomplete, disk will not boot
root@fvdw-sta-kirkwood:/ #

At this point i can no longer see /dev/sda, its like its disappeared...

Code: Select all
root@fvdw-sta-kirkwood:/ # fdisk /dev/sda
fdisk: can't open '/dev/sda'
root@fvdw-sta-kirkwood:/ # gdisk -l /dev/sda
GPT fdisk (gdisk) version 0.8.5

Problem opening /dev/sda for reading! Error is 6.

I've tried different drives with no luck.

Here is the output from installer.log

Code: Select all
root@fvdw-sta-kirkwood:/ # cat installer.log
fvdw-sl-installer log
tftpd ip address 172.29.173.72

GPT fdisk (gdisk) version 0.8.5

Problem opening /dev/sda for reading! Error is 6.

Not sure what is happening. Is there a way to manually do this install?

In the above post I was using a 10tb drive, but I also tried doing this with a 2tb drive and got the exact same results.

I think I figured the issue out. I followed the instructions here: viewtopic.php?f=28&t=2799

I edited fvdw-sl-installer-3-1.sh

I deleted everything between these two lines

# deleting old partitons

and

# create new partition scheme

Then tried again and it installed successfully. Doesn't seem to be successfully booting up after the install, but i'm past the original problem at least.

I've gone through the install process a number of times now, but the system never comes up after installing and issuing the reboot -f

I've tried different disks, power cycling a few times, waiting a while. Is there a way to troubleshoot what is happening?

Well I feel stupid, the device was booting up. I had the network cable in nic 2 and not nic 1. Moved it to the nic 1, turned it on and it booted right up.

Glad to hear that you solved the problem. Note, the firmware can enable both network interfaces but it needs a setup via the web interface.
