I remember that some usb disks are not detected if the usb.ids database is not updated.
First, can you check if you have the file /usr/share/usb.ids ?

root@fvdw-sta-kirkwood:/lib # cd /usr
root@fvdw-sta-kirkwood:/usr # cd share

Are you sure about your USB cable? It's not a 'power only' cable?
How about eSata?
Indeed I forgot this point.Mijzelf wrote:I don't think the usb.ids file is the problem.

(the file doesn't require special permission)
Then try to unplug and plug again the udb drive. Post the dmesg content and see if new devices are available in /proc/partitions.
I think that the right sequence is:pacco wrote:I rebooted, uploaded mdadm, started the array, connected the usb disk and started udevstart.
Previously I uploaded mdadm, udevstart while the usb disk was connected and the array couldn't start.
OK. Maybe somehow the USB disk is only detected on boot. In that case it can shift the disk devices, which means the raid array has to be assembled from other devices.pacco wrote:I did notice one thing. When I rebooted the Lacie whilst the usb disk connected I couldn't start the RAID. I rebooted again without the usb disk, mounted the RAID and then connected the usb disk.
cat /proc/partitions

Can you redo that, and post the output of
- Code: Select all
cat /proc/partitions
Return to Lacie 5big Network vs2
