Of course I intension to put the formidable firmware;-) and always use it as a multi-hd.

Of course I will always be available to do some testing on this device to become more active part in this project:-)

@fvdw

if I want to use the hd individually (no raid) as the 5bigv1 I do something special or just that I insert the individual hd any Dimensions ??

I can also interchange the hd 5bigv1 this without problems and data loss?

as soon as I have money I buy the most capacious of 4 tb hd and will mount them on to 5bigv2

Hi taetae,

Except for the system disk (sda), your data 5big1 disk can be used with the 5big2. You can change their order but there is less chance to have issues after rebooting the 5big2 if you keep the original order.

About the sda disk, as 5big2 and 5big1 don't use the same kernel you can not use directly this disk with 5big2.

The easy way to use it (but after you won't be able to use again with your 5big1).

So with your 5big1, in putty do:
Code: Select all
echo 5big2 >/etc/platform
 sed -rie 's#(.*)<platform>5big1</platform>#\1<platform>5big2</platform>#g' /rw_fs/etc/nas_conf_db.xml

Reload the web-interface
upgrade the firmware with the last image for 5big2 but not do the step3: reboot
stop your 5big1
plug the sda disk in the first left slot of your 5big2 and boot the 5big2 with all 5big1 disks.

no jocko, the system disk I have already created using a disk 2 tb
Now as soon as I have some money I will buy the other 4 hd (undecided whether to take 5 tb or 6TB) so now to try only the slot just wanted to take a hd 5big v1 and v2 5big try it on (the v1 will continue to operate normally with all discs already settled.
I would use the disks that will buy 5 or 6 tb how we use on 5bigv1 no raid but only data storage as individual hd

In both Nas I have already installed the operating system (5 big 500gb hd v1 and v2 5 big hd 2 tb)

5big v1 (system 500gb hd + 4 hd 2tb storage - no raid)

5big v2 (system hd 2 tb + can also use the hd 2tb the 5big without losing data ?? - if I buy 4 hd 5 or 6 tb tb I can use them as individual disks of archival as on 5 big v1?)

I do not need the raid I want to create the same thing done on 5 big hd v1 or individual storage on the 5big v2
I hope I explained:-P

Yes I already wrote:

but you need to create again the shares to see your data from the samba server.

Yes you can, you must create their partition table. see: viewtopic.php?f=7&t=1867#p14937 (all is already explained! :pound )

ps, if you consider raid please be aware of the maximum volume size.
My knowledge is limited for raid but I remember have read that maximum size can be 16 TB only. So using 5 disks of 4 TB would not work to use all of them in a raid setup.

Jocko has more experience, maybe he can say if this is correct or not

I don't think that there is a real limit for a raid only the fs can produce limitations.

Maybe, fvdw thinks of the e2fsprogss(ext3/4) limit which is 16TB.

So if you have five 4TB disks in a raid5, its size will be 0.8*5*4TB=16TB.
As we use e2fsprogs, you can not use 5 disks higher than 4TB (or use 5 partitions higher than 4TB) with a raid5 built with 5 disks.

Note: if you use 4 disks, the raid5 size is (4-1)*disksize. So in this case you can not use disk bigger than ~5TiB
if you use 3 disks, the raid5 size is (3-1)*disksize. So in this case you can not use disk bigger than 8 TB

So guys ... starting from the fact that I do not care the Raid .. vofglio use the disks in a single as the 5big v1
that maximum size must have individual hd ??

if all goes well for the end of January I will purchase.....
