5big network vs2 : bad magic number

Postby gre3d » Mon Mar 03, 2014 7:03 pm

hello, i hope that you can help me with an issue i,m facing with my NAS.

I bought it without disk and i have tried it with a WD 500 but nothing happened, it doesn't want to boot so i can't access it neither via LAN nor USB, i've tried the factory reset but same problem, i've tried with the fvdw-sl console like explained in the help section, but when it interrupt the 5big2 boot we receive the message "booting image at 00800000 .... bad magic number". is there any solution to my problem? is it hopeless?

thank you so much for what you've accomplished so far!

No it is not hopeless. As the 5big2 is responding to the u-boot terminal i means at least the cpu, memory and network card are working.
Probably you are doing something wrong. This is typically the error message that you get if you do not use the right sequence to load a kernel when using the u-boot terminal.

You need to be more specific what you have done with the fvdw-sl console or are trying to do.
If you use the feature to run the standalone kernel or load external kernel it should automatically perform the right sequence to oload and boot a kernel.
From what you describe it seems you trying to load a kernel by yourself using the u-boot terminal but you first need to load a kernel before being able to boot it.

thanks for your quick answer ;)

i want to install the 15.1 firmware on my 5big 2 which doesn't want to boot normally, can't acces it via lan nor usb. so i proceeded this way:

1- download the fvdw-sl-15-1 firmware for lacie 5big network_v2
2- launched the fvdw-sl console
3- Action > standalone kernel, load and start > choose 'UIMAGE-395-NWSP2CL-179-standalone' > ok
4- then I got the two following messages:
-waiting for u-boot
and when turning on the NAS we got this message:
.
.
.
filename 'uimage-395-nwsp2cl-179-standalone'.
load adress : 0x800000
loading: *
TFTP error: 'No such file or directory' <1>
starting again

## Booting image at 00800000 ...
Bad Magic Number
Marvell>>

and that's it, nothing else....exept the telnet window with the 'timeout connection' message.

hope you can tell me what i did wrong

thanks

Hi gre3d,

'standalone kernel, load and start' action can be used only if the firmware is already installed.
So for a first install you must use the action 'Instll fvdw-sl firmware'

I am sorry jocko but that isn't correct,
the standalone kernel can be used without having the firmware installed.
It is a standalone kernel and will run regardless of what is present on the hard disks, it is the purpose of that feature.

The problem is here
filename 'uimage-395-nwsp2cl-179-standalone'.
load adress : 0x800000
loading: *
TFTP error: 'No such file or directory' <1>
starting again

The standalone kernel cannot find the tftp server, this can have two reason
(1) tftp server is not running, but it should be started automatically when using standalone kernel
(2) your firewall setting are blocking the tftp server

hi Jocko, fvdw,

I tried again using the action "install fvdw-sl firmware" as adviced by jocko (haven't read your reply yet fvdw) got the message 'connection time out' without any 'bad magic number' message and then choosed the action 'standalone kernel, load and start' and then it worked, can finally access my 5big2...awsome firmware!...............thank you so much for developing it!

merciiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii

one last question, can i use 5 disks of 4To each with your firmware ?

once again : thanks!
