What kind of PC are you using?. If it is a tower then it might have a second sata port that you could use.
I have no experience with VMware but on virtualbox you can add usb interface
For VMware see this link

Note that your nas disk has 8 partitions. You need to access partition 8

Input/output error doesn't sound good, such error is typically coming if a disk sector cannot be read. If it was a permission error you would get message permission denied.
Anyhow do you run kali as user root ?
If not try to run as root.
Can you open the other partitions of the nas disk or do they give the same error?

Hi fvdw,
i report last experiences but i'm pretty sure the problem is the HD faulted.
i tried to connect it many times under kali linux in VM as administrator.
The HD sometimes is recognized and show partitions after few times....otherwise not.....when i try to open partition 8 it retrive me always errors and partitions after long disappears from the desk.....same for others....
Ialso tried to connect HD directly on serial ata on mobo.....when i switch on the pc smart protection on PC retrive me Predicted Failure of HD durig check and ask me to backup immediatly data because failure will be imminent.
So i think it is impossible to try more to backup datas and i think i lost them forever.
I ordered now a toshiba new 14tb hd and i would try to replace in NetworkSpace2 chassis and try to install from 0 the firmware

Thx for the update, sorry to hear that your harddisk is defective but than indeed it is game over.
A 14TB disk....cool but expensive. That will take some time format...you must use gpt type partition table

If you have the fvdw-sl console on your pc you can use it, just select install firmware and follow the instructions in the main window of the console
