@fvdw

I understand your exasperation but please believe me when I assure you that I didn't ignore what you wrote the first time.

The fact remains that the ip address which my DHCP server/router has continued to assign is unchanged from the static address I originally set for the Lacie firmware. The proof (if any is needed) is that the whole of the installation of the fvdw firmware I've just carried-out was (successfully) transmitted via the telnet client to the NS2 using that ip address.
The standard fvdw-sl firmware use a dynamic IP address assigned by dhcp server.
I can understand that the firmware uses the ip address assigned by the DHCP server (in my case my router). But did you really mean that the firmware can only use that address if it's dynamically assigned? ie that dynamic assignment is mandatory? Why would the firmware care...?
To opne the web interface you need to know the ip addres of the nas....So the only thing left to do is finding out which ip the nas has gotten from your router.
I do know it (because my router is telling me what it is). But no connection to the fvdw web interface is able to be made by using it.
PS the nswp2 should respond to the power button. But you have to use it as follow.
press it and keep it pressed for 1 second but no longer then 5 second and then release it will cause a reboot. press it en keep it pressed for more then 5 seconds will cause a power down.
Sad to say, I've tried everything including timing it against the second-hand on my watch. Nothing has worked.

Hi fuddyduddy

Did you switch off the nwsp2 and rebooted it ?

Please reboot it by pulling the power cord and plug it in again. The blue led should come on and start to blink rapidly for a short period, you should hear the disk spinning up. Then the blue should irregular blink dependent on harddisk activity, wait until it becomes steady. After that try to login using the web interface.

about the dynamic/static IP.
The process to get a an IP is driven by the software running on the nas. The way to obtain an ip can be static or dynamic. In case of static the firmware assigns to the network interface of the nas a fixed ip and does not ask your dhcp server to assign one. The static one is then stored in the firmware. So a static address set in the lacie firmware is not used by the fvdw-sl firmware.
In case of a dynamic IP then the firmware contacts the dhcp server for an ip address and when the firmware receive on from the dhcp server it assigns that to the network interface of the nas. I do not know how your router is setup but it seems you have assigned a certain IP to a mac address, in this case the mac address of your nwsp2. I don't know if this causes issues witht he firmware to assign the IP I would advise you to turn of (if you have set it) and then try again. Please use the fvdw-sl assistant to find the ip assigned to the nas.

And yes the fvdw-sl firmware allows dynamic and static IP but by default it uses dynamic. If you manage to get the network interface working then you can change that setting as you like

Hi fvdw

The key problem I'm having, if I've understood it correctly, is that I can't find a way to force my router to allow the fvdw firmware now installed on my NS2 to ask it for a (dynamic) IP address. Instead, it persists with the static (which it denotes as "manual") IP address from before, and I imagine it's that which is preventing communication from my client (desktop) PC to the fvdw firmware, via the router.

Pinging that IP address from my PC with 32 bytes of data sends all four packets, and all are received ("0% loss"), but the reply given by my PC is nevertheless "Destination host unreachable". Likewise, fvdw-sl Assistant returns "no nas found..." and clicking the 'scan' button just gets the same response.

In my router's settings (in its browser interface) is a page 'Internet/LAN' -> 'DHCP lease' with the following description:-
DHCP Lease Settings
Add manual IP address assignment, delete automatic IP Address assignment or set automatic assignment to manual
Manual assignment
Assign an IP address to specified MAC address manually.

Note that it only permits adding "manual" addresses and deleting automatic, or changing automatic to manual; what it doesn't permit is changing manual (eg my NS2's persisting IP address) to automatic. It seems that that can only be done from the other end ie the PC or NAS where the respective network adapter lives. So, back to square one.

All else having failed the only thing left so far as I can see seems to be to use that page in my router's settings to delete the persisting static IP address of the NS2, and see what effect that has. Perhaps that will clear the way for the fvdw firmware at last to be able to request an "automatic" (=dynamic) new IP address from the router.

I've run out of all other ideas, but I won't do that without getting your reaction first.

Hi Fuddyduddy

I am at work so I have limited time during the day. This evening it will be better

I asked you in previous post this
Please reboot it by pulling the power cord and plug it in again. The blue led should come on and start to blink rapidly for a short period, you should hear the disk spinning up. Then the blue should irregular blink dependent on harddisk activity, wait until it becomes steady. After that try to login using the web interface.

Did you do that and please describe the behavior of the led as accurate as possible.

Next what is the ip address pool that your router uses ?

As next option we will need to check the installation of the firmware.
For that we are going to load again the standalone kernel and do some checks on the disk partitions.

but first complete the above

Hi fvdw

Its behaviour conformed in all respects with your description. But as already reported all attempts to open the web interface have failed.
Next what is the ip address pool that your router uses ?
"192.168.11.2 for up to 64 addresses"; subnet mask 255.255.255.0

at least the router IP pool and subset mask settings explains why the telnet client failed to use 192.168.1.252 or 192.168.0.252 as your router doesn't allow connections to those ip's

What is the ip you think the nwsp2 is set to in your router ? and please write down the mac address the ip addres is linked to in your router.
This evening we are going to fire up the standalone kernel again and solve this issue. I go home from work now, speak to you later

ok

now start the standalone kernel and connect with the telnet client (choose action in fvdw-sl console to run standalone kernel)
When you are connected with the tenet client give the following commands:
Code: Select all
mkdir /sda7
mount /dev/sda7 /sda7
cat /sda7/boot.log

This last command will produce output, it will list the content of the file boot.log that should be present on partition sda7 if the nwsp2 has booted the firmware.
In the last part of this file the assigned ip will be listed.

To check the mac addass give as command
Code: Select all
ifconfig

It will give various output including the mac address of the ntework interface. We can use that to check if the info in your router matches

To stop the standalone kernel and switch off the the nwsp2 use
Code: Select all
poweroff -f

to reboot it use
Code: Select all
reboot -f

In both case the telnet cleint will stop functioning after the command as the nwsp2 either poweroffs or reboots.

Hi

I did this. When I entered the second line of code I got
Code: Select all
mounting /dev/sda7 on /sda7 failed: Invalid argument
Any idea why?

mmm..then something is wrong with sda7, give this command

Code: Select all
fdisk -l /dev/sda

and post output
